July 4, 1962 (Winnipeg, Manitoba) – January 19, 2016 (Calgary, Alberta)
Leigh passed away peacefully, surrounded by the love of her family, on Tuesday, January 19, 2016, at the young age of 53 years after a long and courageous battle with breast cancer. Leigh was born in Winnipeg, but moved to England at a young age, where she spent many happy childhood years. She fell in love with the English countryside and returned as often as she could. She and her family moved back to Canada in 1974 and settled in Calgary, where she made her home for over 40 years, attending school at Sir Winston Churchill High, University of Calgary and SAIT. Leigh fell in love with Hugh, married him in 1983, and they lived happily together for over 32 years. Leigh trained as a Medical Laboratory Technologist, but when her two wonderful children arrived, she spent her time raising them and making her home a warm, secure and joyful place. Leigh enjoyed spending time with family and friends, listening to music, cooking, puttering in her garden and with her art, and traveling every chance she got. Leigh was a kind, caring, loving and gentle soul and will be forever missed and loved by her husband Hugh; her two children, Jillian and Spencer; her sisters, Kim (Richard) and Kerry (Mike); her father, Don; her in-laws, Isabel Wishart, Tricia (David), Doug (Sandy), Nancy (Craig) and Tam (Shereen); and numerous wonderful aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Joanne and mother Peggy. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the wonderful doctors, nurses and staff at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre and the Agape Hospice. These are the heroes of the medical system, caring for patients and their families as they deal with the cruel aspects of disease and the death of a loved one. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, memorial tributes may be made to HBOCSociety.org, which educates and supports patients and families and strives to fight hereditary cancers. A Celebration of Leigh’s Life will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Saturday, January 23, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
