Lois Marlene Torvik (Norrish) was the eldest child of Jack and Bella Norish. She was born in Strongfield, Saskatchewan and was the older sister to Donna (Bill) and Dean (Carmen). We know that she was very special to them, and that she also held a very special place in their heart. Lois' many nieces and nephews were also very special to her.
Growing up in Strongfield, she was surrounded by family and friends. Although a bit shy, she participated in school plays and whole-heartedly took part in sports. She was an excellent skater and hockey player and was the assistant captain of the women's hockey team, the Strongfield Jets. Curling and baseball were also sports she played. Lois was also gifted musically, she played piano and also played the saxophone in a band with 2 and sometimes 3 young men.
After high school, Lois studied education at the University of Saskatchewan. It was while she was student teaching that she met and fell in love with Dale Torvik. After graduating from university, she went on to further her studies at the School for the Deaf.
Dale and Lois later moved to Ottawa where their son, Tim, was born, and then on to Moose Jaw where their daughter, Tammy, was born. In 1967, they settled in Calgary and built a life together.
Now, on to the person. Lois was the most kind and loving person we know of. Animals and children ADORED her - adults too adored her for that matter. As an itinerant teacher to hard of hearing kids, they would fondly remember her and were thrilled to run into her as teenagers, and even adults - that's how deep their fond memories were of her.
Mom and Dad had many good friends going back several decades that have remained lifelong friends. Karen and Ernie Bonk, George and Ollie Bilych, Doug and Myra Vensel, "Mac" and Helen McIndoe. I know there are many more dear friends, so please don't let my forgetfulness make you think you were not a dear friend to them both.
Lois was a wonderful cook and never a bad meal was served by her. The fresh bread and pies that she made had people stopping by, not just for the friendly visit!
And then came the grandchildren! We thought the pets were getting "extra" treatment! Grandkids Matthew, Emma, and Owen were each so special to her and were the light of her life. She was so proud of their accomplishments and loved watching them become the people they are today.
We will always miss you, mom and grandma. We know that you continue to watch over us and are proud to see us become the people we were meant to be.
Love you always.
Tim, Tammy, Matthew, Emma and Owen
