January 31, 1934 – January 10, 2017 Lorna Frieda Ross passed away peacefully after a brief illness at The Rockyview Hospital in Calgary, on Tuesday, January 10, 2017, at the age of 82 years, just shy of her 83rd birthday. Lorna was born in 1934 in Olds, Alberta, to Fredrick and Frieda Hein. Raised on farms in the Kavanagh & Winfield, Alberta areas Lorna learned to be fiercely independent from an early age; attending nursing school in Calgary & becoming a nurse around the age of nineteen. After working at various rural hospitals in Central Alberta, Lorna eventually had an extended career at The Alberta Hospital Ponoka, in Ponoka, Alberta.
She met the love of her life (Jack Ross) in the early sixties, married him in 1969, and soon gave birth to her only daughter, Laurie Ann. The young family moved to Calgary from Edmonton in 1970 where they settled into their new home enjoying a happy and productive life together. With Jack employed as a survey engineer, Lorna maintained their home, raised their daughter, and pursued her passion for gardening and working outdoors. Lorna was an avid bowler. She bowled for over 35 years with the ‘Bowling Belles’ at the Huntington Hills bowling alley & The Bowling Depot.
After Jack passed away in 1995, Lorna remained in the family home, right up until last year, where she was well-known and beloved by her neighbours – Lorna’s caring nature and giving spirit had her doing anything for anybody who needed a helping hand, and was even known as a local ‘snow-angel’ into her eighties. The last nine years of her life were also enriched by the wonderful companionship of her little dog Fearghus.
Lorna is remembered with deepest love and a profound sense of loss by her daughter, Laurie Ann Ross. She is also fondly remembered by her brother Norman (Jean) Hein; cousin Phyllis Brown; nieces Geraldine (Watson) Anderson, Donna (Gordon) Strom, Barbara (Gerald) Harbers, and Kari (Martin) Tolton; great-nephews Timothy Ross, Thomas Ross, and Patrick Gerz; and great-niece LeeAnne Gerz.
She will also be sorely missed by her dear friends and second family, the Wakelam’s: Tracy, Keith, Jessica, Joshua, Kaila and Mackenzie; and by many other nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, extended family, and dear friends.
Lorna is predeceased by her husband, John (Jack) Telford Ross; parents Fredrick and Frieda Hein; sister Margaret Humphrey; brother-in-law & sister-in-law Donald & Lee Ross; sister- in-law Almeda Lacombe; nephew John Ross; and great-nephew Scott Grimes.
At Lorna’s request, there will be no funeral service. Instead she insisted that her dear family and close friends gather together to celebrate her life, at her cherished home that she cared for, for so many years with her beloved family, at a date to be announced. The family would like to say a special thanks to Anna, Donna, all her personal caregivers, and Dr. Mark Addison from the second floor of Extendicare/Hillcrest for their kindness and concern for Lorna this past year. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
