Mai was born on November 27, 1946, in Dongxing, Guangxi, China, and was raised in Saigon, Vietnam. On April 5, 1983, she immigrated to Calgary, Alberta, where she made her home and lived for the remainder of her life.
As the eldest of seven siblings, Mai was lovingly known as “Cee Ling” which means “General" in Cantonese that reflects her guidance and leadership in the family. To her nieces and nephews, she was known as “Auntie 1.” She played a foundational role in her family, helping to raise the younger generations and watching over them as they grew. She expressed her love most often through food, and she will be especially remembered for her delicious cooking—most famously her chả giò (spring rolls). Through shared meals filled with warmth and deliciousness, she brought her family together and created lasting memories that will be cherished forever.
Mai valued her family above all else. She was kind, generous, and selfless, always putting others before herself. Fiercely independent, she found joy in helping those around her and quietly supporting anyone in need. Her gentle demeanour was paired with a deep inner strength and unwavering devotion to her loved ones.
A devoted Catholic, Mai was strict and faithful in her beliefs, while also being accepting and respectful of others’ faiths within her multi-faith household. Her compassion extended beyond her family; even as a young woman, she demonstrated generosity by helping staff at the school where she was raised, offering money and purchasing milk to assist in caring for a baby in need.
