Mario Arturo Dubón was born on May 11, 1946, in Guatemala City to María Dolores Sosa and Mario Dubón Serrano. He graduated from the Catholic school San Sebastián and earned his title of Maestro de Educación Primaria Urbana in 1962. By the age of 18, he began working at Constructora Girola, where he gained invaluable experience in construction and project management. At 26, he was entrusted with overseeing the construction of grain silos in Guatemala, successfully managing five major projects.
Mario married the love of his life, Eugenia, on June 20, 1970 (officially celebrated on June 25, 1970). Together, they raised four children: Mario Arturo (1971), Juan Carlos (1973), José Gabriel (1979), and Jennifer Marie (1982).
In Guatemala, Mario practiced architecture and provided a loving, nurturing home for his family. Seeking a brighter future, he immigrated to Canada in 1988 with Eugenia and their children, joining relatives who had arrived earlier. Despite the challenges of establishing a new life, Mario worked tirelessly in various jobs - cleaning, warehousing, construction, and as a draftsman at SMED. Through determination and resilience, he built a life of stability and opportunity for his loved ones.
After his children started families of their own, Mario retired and rediscovered his passion for photography, finding joy in capturing life’s special moments. He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to family, his strong work ethic, and his creative spirit.
Mario is survived and lovingly remembered by his wife, Eugenia; his children, Mario Arturo, Juan Carlos, José Gabriel, and Jennifer Marie; his sisters; Edna Coronado from Houston, Texas and Frieda Aroche in Calgary; as well as his grandchildren, Alejandro Mario Fernando, Emilio Andres, Milo and Julian Nicolas. Mario is also survived by numerous extended family members and dear friends in Guatemala and Calgary who will greatly miss his kindness, wisdom, and warmth.
A Celebration of Mario’s Life will be held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Friday, February 21, 2025, at 1:00 p.m.
If friends so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to the Meow Foundation, reflecting Mario’s generous and compassionate nature.
