

Marnie Dianne Sorensen (nee Jackson), 69, of Calgary, Alberta, passed away on Tuesday, August 27, 2024, at the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. She was surrounded by her family as she peacefully passed on.
She was born on March 11, 1955, to Lorraine Patterson (nee Young) and Derek Jackson in Calgary, Alberta at the Holy Cross Hospital.
Marnie grew up in the NW of Calgary and attended Brentwood Elementary School, Senator Patrick Burns and Colonel Irvine Junior High Schools and then James Fowler High School.
Marnie attended the University of Calgary and graduated with a Bachelor of Education in 1977. Later on she went to night school when living in Edmonton and completed an accounting program and obtained her Professional Certified Management Accountant designation
She married Kim Sorensen on July 30, 1977 in Calgary, Alberta and they had three children, Erica, Lief and Axel. They lived together in Alberta in the communities of Calgary, Edmonton, Vulcan, and Medicine Hat before moving back to Calgary to be close to family.
She worked briefly as a high school teacher and then after night school worked as a bookkeeper for a variety of jobs before taking on the role of Controller for family car dealership, Sorensen Chev Olds in Vulcan, Alberta. She carried that role on when the family moved to Medicine Hat, Alberta and operated Sorensen Pontiac Buick. Marnie retired when her and Kim sold the business in 2007 at the age of 52.
She enjoyed all sorts of sports and adventures such as skiing, hiking, walks with friends, squash, golf, and waterskiing.
Marnie was an artistic spirit and enjoyed fashion design and drawing and painting. She briefly went to the Alberta College of the Arts in Calgary and also took courses at Ryerson School of Fashion in Toronto. She later in life completed numerous workshops and courses and was accepted as an Exhibiting Member of the Federation of Canadian Artists in 2023. She has blessed many with her beautiful paintings and drawings over the years that will be treasured.
Marnie is survived by husband Kim Sorensen, daughter Erica and Matthew Crowther (grandchildren Hank, Eddie and Niels Crowther), son Lief and Emily Sorensen (grandchildren Fredric and Peter Sorensen) and son Axel and Heather Sorensen (grandchildren Hudson, June and Sloane Sorensen), brother Owen and Marilyn Jackson and sister Theresa and Larry Dow. She was preceded in death by her father Derek Jackson and mother Lorraine Patterson.
Marnie found joy and energy through her adventures and time spent with family and friends. She will be profoundly missed.
Funeral services will be Saturday, September 7, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at Hillhurst United Church, 1227 Kensington Close NW, Calgary. Reverend John Pentland officiating.
