Martha Olson

It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Martha Olson at the age of 96. Martha passed away peacefully with her children by her side at Silverado Seniors Community in Calgary.

Martha was born in Hanna, Alberta to Sophie and Gottlieb Pregitzer. She was the 9th child, having two older sisters, Ruth and Rose, and then 6 brothers, Arthur, Albert, Fred, Johnny, Henry and Walter. Sadly, Sophie died when Martha was 6 years old. Ruth and Rose stepped in to help raise the family and they saw to it that Martha had some nice things even though she was surrounded by boys.

Martha finished high school in Olds, Alberta and even drove her oldest nephew Don to school for grade 1 in an old truck with no doors! She then moved to Calgary and met Arn Olson while they were both working at The Bay. They fell in love and were married in 1952. She was a loving mother to 4 children, Andrew, Janet, Patricia and Christopher. The home was always well kept and comfortable and there were always healthy, home cooked meals and baking to be had. Martha’s door was always open to friends and family who needed a place to stay, everyone was welcome.

Martha was an active member of the community with Girl Guides of Canada, Nose Hill Park committee and working the store at the senior's centre. She loved gardening and was an amazing cook, especially her prime rib roast.

She was known for her big, beautiful smile which she had until her final days. She leaves to mourn, her children, Drew (Joslyn), Janet (Peter), Chris and Patty. Grandchildren, Clayton, Mathius, Megan (Garrett), Marnie (Alejandro), Angie (Kevin), Carly, Warren, Jordan, Coltan and Emma as well as numerous great grandchildren. A celebration of life will be held at the North Haven Community Hall, 5003 North Haven Drive NW, Calgary on August 7, 2026, from 1-3pm.

We would like to thank the amazing staff at Silverado Seniors Community for their compassion and excellent care of Martha in her final years.
