With deep and profound sadness, we announce the passing of Maureen Robertson of Calgary, AB, early on the evening of Wednesday, November 1, 2017, at her home.
Maureen leaves behind her husband Cliff; children Laureen Regan (Doug Junor) and Dwayne Furuseth, both of Calgary, AB; grandson, Aaron Furuseth of Gillam, MB; as well as siblings Brendan Mulhall, Beatrice Bilin, Alice Reagan and Cora Cordoba.
Born in Dublin, Ireland, she was an award winning hairstylist who represented Ireland for Wella in hair coloring/tinting competition in Heidelberg, Germany, before starting her own business. Her hard work, long hours and focus on excellence in customer service created a thriving business for almost 10 years in Dalkey, Ireland.
Maureen immigrated to Canada in 1967, crossing the country by train and beginning anew in Edmonton. She raised her two children, Laureen and Dwayne, moving several times to Whitehorse, Edmonton and Prince Albert before finally settling in 1979, in Calgary.
She picked up her career, managing the wig boutique for First Ladies at the Bay in Market Mall in Calgary. For 11 years, she encouraged and built up the confidence of so many people who came to consult and buy wigs from her. She won multiple customer service awards in her role.
She never lost her beautiful Irish accent which, along with her wonderful little sayings brought from Ireland, never failed to make people smile. She always sent family, friends and strangers away with a ‘God Bless You’.
Maureen was blessed with a true green thumb. Her garden and plants in the home were always lush and you would often find her working in the garden during the summer or fussing over and nurturing her plants in her home.
What Maureen loved most was her family, near and far, and her beloved Ireland. She never stopped missing her homeland and her siblings who are scattered around the globe. Some of her happiest times were travelling to visit family and Ireland.
Strangers and loved ones alike benefited from her kindness and encouragement. She knew we all have the ability to make our lives better and always told everyone who had a dream of a better job, education, trip or a dream of something better, ‘You can do it!’.
People whose lives she touched describe her as being generous, kind, encouraging, strong, cheeky, determined, feisty, filled with pride for her children, sweet, so very Irish and having a smile that you will never forget. She was a true lady. Maureen has closed her beautiful Irish eyes for the last time and we are all heartbroken. She will be remembered always.
The family wishes to sincerely thank Evan Howe, friends and neighbors, and the compassionate caregivers who loved and cared for her so wonderfully in her home.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Corpus Christi Church, 404 Northmount Place NW, Calgary, on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at 10:00 a.m., with interment to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery, 3219 – 4 Street NW.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Alzheimer and Dementia society of one’s choosing.
