Peggy was the eldest daughter of Cheng Lok Sang (father) and Chan Suk Ying (mother), born in Hong Kong on March 3, 1932. She and her family, including younger sister Angela, lived and struggled through the Second World War. Through hard work and tenacity, she graduated from Saint Mary’s Canossian College; then studied and practiced as a mid-wife. She married husband Luke Ko in 1958 and quickly became mother to Yvonne and Joseph. Rather than become a stay at home mother as was common at the time, she was determined to continue her professional life as a mid-wife all the while taking care of her family including her parents.
Peggy moved to Canada in 1969 hoping to provide her children with greater opportunities. She and the family lived briefly in Bowmanville and Oshawa, Ontario before moving to Edmonton in 1971. Here she helped her husband with a restaurant business. Although she worked long hours, she always had time to ensure her children had properly cooked meals and completed their homework on time. Although working six days a week, she made clothes, grew beautiful gardens, threw large dinner parties, and assisted friends who needed help. She expanded her children’s interest in the world by taking them on vacations all over Canada, the US, Asia, and Europe. All the while, she encouraged her children to reach their full potential and she set a high standard. She was most proud when her daughter graduated with a Ph.D. and her son became an Engineer.
After retiring, she moved to Calgary to be closer to her children and was rewarded when she became grandmother to Tianna and Tyler, the joys in her life. Although her command of English was limited, she tried to communicate with the grand-children as best as she could and looked forward to every phone call and visit they made to her.
She is sadly missed by husband Luke, daughter Yvonne (husband Kin), son Joseph (wife Sandra) and grand-children Tianna and Tyler. She is also survived by sister Angela Seto, and numerous brothers- and sisters-in-laws, nieces and nephews, and extended family members. It was her passion, determination, and generous nature that made her so special. A private family service was held at Foster's Garden Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Alberta, Suite 200, 119 – 14 Street NW, Calgary, AB T2N 1Z6.
We love you mom and will miss you always!
