With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our mother, Rosamond Eleanor Richmond (nee Ashworth), on Friday, May 9, 2025, in Calgary, Alberta, at the age of 88 years. Born in Berwyn, Alberta on February 24, 1937, Rosamond was very much an “uptown girl” with rural roots, having been raised on a farm in Deadwood, Alberta.
Rosamond was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, and will be forever missed by her five children, Laurie Richmond, Sherri (Roy) Swystun, Kevin Richmond, Valoree (Shawn) Richmond Welles, and Darek (Tyra) Richmond. She is also survived by thirteen grandchildren (Tyler, Kyle, Dana, Jessica, Thomas, Rebecca, Erica, Bryce, Lauren, Cameron, Vanessa, Jack, and Sabina), and a great-grandson, Wesley.
Our one-of-a-kind mother was predeceased by her father and mother, Joseph and Eleanor Ashworth, her brother Ken (Ulla) Ashworth, and her sisters Vivian Saffel and Dorothy Christensen.
Throughout her life Rosamond had many passions. Always adventurous and a natural athlete, she participated in many sporting activities over her lifetime, including downhill skiing, waterskiing, rollerblading, golf, pickleball, and tennis. Rosamond was a very good tennis player; she enjoyed the friendships that tennis brought and it satisfied her desire for competition. She was fiercely competitive in everything that she did.
As a young mother, nothing was more important than raising her brood of five children and providing healthy, nutritious homemade meals. She was famous around the neighbourhood for baking wonderful homemade bread, matrimonial bars, cookies, and even deep-fried doughnuts that were better than Tim’s. Gardening was the essence of Rosamond, as she cultivated the soil, planted seeds, and took pride in her home-grown produce provided for her family. Her perennial green thumb has been passed along to many of her descendants.
She was an excellent bridge player and enjoyed playing cards and games of all sorts with her grandchildren. Rosamond was a member of the “hole-in-one club” for golf and finally had a “29 hand” in cribbage just four years ago.
Rosamond particularly enjoyed various needle arts, such as crocheting, knitting, and the almost lost art of tatting, and was exceptional at all of these. She had particularly elegant stylish handwriting and maintained a longstanding pen-pal relationship with her granddaughters. Living independently until her passing, Rosamond always looked after herself, dressed well, and was known for her flashy style, consisting of sequined outfits, cheetah prints, and a sprinkle of gold dust at Christmas. Mom took particular pleasure in celebrating the Christmas season with her family.
Rosamond will always be remembered for her optimistic outlook, feisty competitive nature, and timeless style. Though our hearts ache, we find comfort in her legacy of eternal optimism, strength, resilience, passion for life, and an indomitable spirit that remains with all of us. She will be missed by all those who loved her and will remain in our hearts forever.
A Graveside Service will be held at Hillview Cemetery in Deadwood, Alberta on Friday, June 27th, 2025 at 11:00 AM.
