It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Susan Long of Calgary on July 31, 2025, at the age of 93. Susan grew up in Edmonton where she met the love of her life, Bob Long. She worked in a photo studio doing touch ups and colorations, then as a teacher aide at Capilano school until she and Bob moved to Drayton Valley in 1975 to open Long’s Funeral Services. Susan embraced small town life. Her love of music and singing made her a natural fit for the church choir. She developed a passion for golf, which led her and Bob to a wonderful home on the Highwood Golf Course in High River. There Susan flourished, satisfying her love of family, entertaining, golf, and gardening. She was an active member of the homeowner’s association, organizing annual picnics in the park, and welcoming new neighbours. Susan’s outgoing, warm, and caring nature rewarded her with many lifelong friendships. After Bob’s passing in 2010, she relocated to Comox where she enjoyed being close to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Susan will be lovingly remembered by her son Brent Long of Swift Current, daughter Jodi Long of Calgary, grandchildren Katrina Douglas (Rob) of Comox, Michael Long (Katie McKeown) of Belwood, James Long of Swift Current, great-grandchildren Callum and Liam Douglas of Comox, and numerous nieces, nephews, and their families.
A celebration of Susan’s life will be held at a later date. A private interment will take place at the Highwood Cemetery. Memorial donations in Susan’s name will be gratefully accepted by the Alzheimer Society of Canada or the donor’s choice.
The family wishes to extend thanks and appreciation to the staff of the Sage Hill Retirement Residence Memory Care unit for the amazing care of our Mom over the past 4 years.
