With great sadness we announce the passing of Susan Elizabeth (Betty) McLeod (Lanier) on Wednesday, October 2, 2013.
Betty passed away peacefully at the Bethany Care Centre in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 84 years, her four sons by her side. She was predeceased by her husband Angus in 2006.
Born in Lethbridge, Alberta, Betty grew up on the Lanier family farm near Wilson Siding. In 1947, she ventured east by train with a close friend to attend McMaster University. She left McMaster with a B.A. in English and married Angus, an R.C.A.F. veteran and McMaster graduate. They moved to Toronto where Betty put her literary skills to work in the insurance business while her new husband completed his law degree at Osgoode Hall.
Betty and Angus spent most of their lives in Burlington, Ontario, where Betty was actively involved in volunteer work, her church, played piano, golf, and badminton, curled, and generally enjoyed the outdoors - all of that while devoting herself to raising her boys. Once her sons were on their feet, Betty ran Angus’ country law office in what was a true partnership. After retiring, Betty and Angus continued their previous pursuits with the added bonus of more time with their grandchildren in Ontario and Alberta. In 2004, Betty and Angus moved to Calgary, a return for Betty to the big blue skies of her beloved southern Alberta.
Betty was a kind and gentle woman who moved through life with grace and good humour. Betty is survived by her sons, Ken, Don, Ray and David, their partners, eleven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her family extends heartfelt thanks to the dedicated staff at the Bethany Care Centre for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bethany Care Foundation at bethanycarefoundation.com.
A Celebration of Betty’s Life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 10 at Wellington Square United Church, 2121 Caroline Street, Burlington, Ontario. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to the family via the website www.fostersgardenchapel.ca.
