It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Teddy Mah at the age of 89. Teddy was born in Sim Shui Kiu, Toi Shan County, Guangdong Province, China. He was predeceased by his only sibling, Joyce Louie in Nelson, B.C. in 1960, his father Mah Toy in Creston, B.C. in 1973 and mother Gee Toy Vern Mah in Calgary, AB in 2002.
Teddy and his mother immigrated to Canada in 1949 to join his father in Nelson, B.C. and in 1953, they moved to Creston, B.C. In his youth, he loved to play volleyball and basketball. They owned and operated the Club Cafe, the typical small town Chinese restaurant, where Teddy honed his English and cooking skills. The cafe served the community from the 1950s to the mid-1980s. Teddy married May Leong on March 4, 1957 and raised 5 children in Creston. Teddy was a man of few words; hardworking and generous. Selflessly, he sponsored/supported relatives coming to Canada. In 1986 Ted and May retired and moved to Calgary. In retirement Ted and May travelled extensively: Alaskan and Mediterranean cruises, trips to San Francisco, Las Vegas, Hawaii, and the Great Wall of China. He played Mah Jong and blackjack; watched football and hockey games and enjoyed movies-westerns and musicals. An avid all-weather walker, Teddy transitioned from daily trips through Nose Hill Park to multiple laps on Prince's Island. Teddy loved cooking for family on special occasions. He has shared all his recipes, but his children have yet to master them.
Teddy is survived by wife May of 63 years, children: Eva (Hugh-John), Terry (Wince), Tom (Marian), Don (Linda), Susan (Ross), grandchildren: Beth (Bill), Reggie, John (Sunny), Jake, Kyla, Robyn, Jared, Curtis, and many cousins, nephews and nieces.
The family would like to thank: niece Betty Leong for support and gift of time, Lucia at Super M Drugs for going above and beyond. Clover Living management and staff, Seniors Central and Bayshore Home Care staff. Dr. B.Manns and the P.D. Clinic at the Sheldon Chumir Health Centre and Unit 37 at the Foothills Hospital.
If family and friends desire, a donation in Teddy's name made to the Kidney Foundation of Canada at https://kidney.akaraisin.com/ui/generaldonation/donations/start or the CNIB at https://www.cnib.ca/en?region=gta would be appreciated.
