On Thursday, February 25, 2016, our Dad, Tom Kuwahara, peacefully slipped away from us. He left us as he lived his life, with quiet dignity. He follows our Mom, Ceo, over whom he kept a faithful watch during her last years in a nursing home. They were married for 62 years. Tom was born September 11, 1919 in Mission, BC. He along with his brother, Hiroshi Kuwahara, and cousin, Robert Hori, was one of the surviving owners of Silk-O-Lina Ltd., a retail clothing and fabric store founded in 1932 as the Nippon Silks & Products Co. Ltd. In its prime, the company had 18 stores across Western Canada. The store, as we called it, finally closed in 1997 and Dad retired at age 78. He remained active in the Rotary Club following his retirement, always wanting to continue to contribute to the community. He took up carving birds as a hobby and filled our homes with colourful birds caught in mid-song. Although a man of very few words, he had a quiet wit that would bring laughter to your day. He was the patient loving father to Linda (Bill), Arlene, Brian (Judy) and Cheryl (Sam), and the bemused but attentive grandfather to Patrick, Miyoko, Sean (Michelle), Ian (Macarena), Thomas, Steven, Jennifer, Stephanie and Kimberly and great grandfather to Sofia, Chloe, Sadie, Mateo and Mia. The family wishes to extend many thanks to the doctors and staff at the Cedars Villa Extendicare. A Visitation will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Thursday, March 3, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, on Friday, March 4, 2016 at 2:00 p.m., with interment to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
