Walter Otto Freiter passed away peacefully at the Rockyview General Hospital on March 18, 2016 at the age of 88 years. He was born on December 20, 1927 in Lublin, Poland, the son of Robert and Lydia Freiter. In 1944, during the war, the family was forced to leave Poland and so moved back to Germany. Walter and Sophie met in Germany and were married in 1951. In 1953 they immigrated to Canada, arriving in Halifax on the ship “Beaverbrae” and from there travelled to Cranbrook, B.C., where they made their first home. Walter and Sophie eventually moved to Calgary where they put down roots and Walter worked as a butcher for Safeway. Three things that were very important to Walter were his faith in Jesus, his involvement in the church, and his family. He will be lovingly remembered by his two children; Ruth (Harry) Benke and Gordon (Elizabeth) Freiter, grandchildren; Jennifer (Cory) Buckmaster, Stephanie Benke, Andrew Benke, and Andrea (Joel) Runnalls, and his great-grandchildren; Tristan Buckmaster and Sophie and Suzanne Runnalls. He is survived by his sister Rita (Art) Huber of Kelowna, his brothers; Alois (Lydia) Freiter of Germany and Helmut (Inga) Freiter of Calgary. We rejoice that Walter has been reunited with his mother & father, Lydia and Robert Freiter, his wife, Sophie, and many other friends and relatives. Those wishing to pay their respects may do so at a visitation held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Thursday, March 24, 2016 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. with interment to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
