Born in Romford, East Sussex, England to William and Emily Barrett, he was one of four children and survived his brothers, Stan and Ernie and his sister Sylvia.
Gerald (Gerry) lived life to the fullest and constantly welcomed new adventures. At the age of 19 he joined the RAF and, as a navigator, flew many rescue and reconnaissance missions during WW II. He enjoyed the service and saw much of the world and although he crashed several planes, he swore he wasn’t driving at the time! He finally settled in Canada in the late 40’s and soon after met the lovely Kathleen Warden. They were married on December 13th, 1952 and had three wonderful children. Gerry worked in the electrical industry for over 60 years, capping off his career as the president of Appleton Electric. In his spare time, he enjoyed sailing, golfing, tennis, camping, fishing and spending time with his family and friends.
Gerry was extremely loving and so very proud of his children; Paul Barrett, of Vancouver, Debra Stoeckl of Oakville, and Scott Barrett of Toronto. He treasured his time with them and shared many happy memories over the years. Gerry was also extremely proud of his two grand children, Brent and Kyle Stoeckl and was very fortunate to be a great grandfather to little Tyson.
Gerry also treasured his extended family, which included his son in law, Peter Stoeckl, daughter in law, Sandra Barrett, and his many nieces, nephews and friends who enriched his life.
He was a beloved husband, father, brother, grand-father, father in law, uncle and friend.
Gerry never shied away from new experiences and opportunities. He truly lived by the motto that ‘It is not the years of your life, that counts, it is the life in your years’. The world has lost an amazing man who spread joy and happiness and touched peoples lives wherever he went and whatever he did.
In lieu of a funeral there will be a special celebration of his life in May of this year. Memorial donations may be made in Gerry’s name to the Grand River Hospital Foundation. http://tinyurl.com/z2tm86w
