I spoke to my Grandpa about a week before he passed. He told me he went to the hospital because his arthritis was bad and there was nothing they would do because he was too old. Just have to live with it, he said. He said this in the same tone he'd use to let you know you were out of milk. There was no trace of self-pity in his voice. 

My Grandfather had the courage to look reality in its pox-ugly face and feel no fear or indignity, or bitterness, or sense of entitlement. He would just carry on no matter what, always keeping his values close and his friends closer. That kind of character is a rare substance on the earth and gosh if it ever makes an impression on you when you see it.

I'll always remember Grandpa Mac for his sturdiness and quiet dignity, and his incredibly understated sense of humour. I hope people are talking about how funny this man was, he could bust you up with a look. Ever watch him eat lobster?--well, it was done in total silence, and total enjoyment.

I'm sad I can't be there at the funeral with my family and all Doug's wonderful friends but I wish you all a great day. Thanks for your prayers and kind words everyone, I'm gonna miss him bad but his example endures. Love you all.

Sorry to hear about Doug.  As President of the CNR Todd bowling tournament I know first hand how much Doug enjoyed bowling in the tournament.  He was part of a great bunch of guys and always enjoyed himself.  He will be sadly missed by all of the tournament bowlers.

Sadden to hear about Uncle Doug's passing. Condolences to m'tante and the family from Lou, Amber and the girls (Saint John, NB).

Sorry to hear of Doug's passing. I used to babysit for them when I was 14. We bowled together for many years with the CN League. I enjoyed him.  He was always so glad to see us.  We will always remember his kindness and admire him for living his life to the fullest. God will take care of him now.  May god bless the family in this time of sorrow.  We share your sadness. So sorry to hear of Doug's passing.  My father always enjoyed Doug's visits.

I REMEMBER DOUG FROM MY VISITS TO CAMPBELLTON TO VISIT WITH MY MOTHER.  DOUG WAS A GREAT NEIGHBOUR TO HER AND HELPED WITH CLEARING HER DRIVEWAY.  HIS ASSISTANCE WAS MUCH APPRECIATED. I ALWAYS LIKED SEEING HIM AND HAVING FRIENDLY CONVERSATION.  HE WAS A GREAT GUY.  MY CONDOLENCES TO HIS FAMILY

i worked with doug off and on over the years at cn.  first week there i was paired up with him and couldn't keep up with him...i was 21 and he was 52 and looked 32.  he was a constant source of fun, hard work and advice. lots of laughs, tricks and good times and a few wacks from him to keep us in line made the job worthwhile.  he would take all the young guys under his wing.  all the boys got doug stories galore.....when i think of him i think of him coming around the corner at me and saying ''look here young fella i am gonna tell  you something'' and it usually preceded a story or a blast from him for some stunt i pulled......thanks doug for the memories...rip
