Patrick Callaghan

Patrick was born on December 28th, 1949 in Campbellton, the son of the late Reginald and the late Irene (Chuliner) Callaghan.

Pat joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1968 and retired in 1992. He was a member of the airborne regiment for about 10 years and served on Peacekeeping duties in Cyprus in 1974. In 1979, he switched trades and became a Search and Rescue technician. Between both units, according to him, he had accumulated over 1500 jumps and probably more, as he served one year in the Sky Hawks (Canadian Forces Parachute Demonstration Team) and performed at air shows across North America. Some of the family saw him perform in Chatham, NB. In the late 1980s, he was in Cold Lake, AB. when the military was testing a new parachute - and yes he did jump out of a perfectly serviceable Hercules aircraft as attested to by his brother-in-law who was also in the Hercules aircraft. One of Pat’s search missions in the far north earned him mention in a Reader’s Digest article. He loved the search and rescue field and had many years of coming to people’s aid under the worst of circumstances. He retired in the early 90s from 442 Squadron Comox, BC. as a Sergeant and continued his journey in the search and rescue field by working at the Joint Rescue Coordination Center based at Esquimalt. He later went on to train and became a Red Seal electrician.

He is survived by his son Christian, his brothers, Tom (Cecile), Shaun (Marie), Joe, Don “Duck” (Irene) and sisters Sue O’Brien (Jack), Cathy Callaghan, and Jane Desaulniers (Rene) his brother-in-law Paul Grant (Jackie) , sister in law Sue Grant, and mother in law Mary Grant, and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife Jane Grant, his youngest brother Tim and infant sister Dorothy.

The family will welcome family and friends at Maher’s Funeral Chapel on Friday, May 16th, 2025 from 10.00 AM until time of service at 11.00 AM.

Funeral arrangements were entrusted in the care of Maher’s funeral Home, Campbellton.
