Rebecca (Wilson) Couture grew up in Flatlands N.B, Her brothers and her lost their mother at a young age, she was only 11 when that happened.
Rebecca spent a lot of her time at her grandmothers house and it was there that she inherited the nickname Bea cause her grandmother always said that she was as busy as a bee. Later on in life the spelling changed but by then quite a few people came to know her as Bea.
Rebecca grew up during the depression and her mode of transportation was horse and buggy. While she was growing up she attended a 1 room school house during her earlier years. Later on when she had to come to town there was a bus that would bring them in over a long gravel road. Rebecca attended the Campbellton Proporitory School. We are not sure what grade she completed but know that she never did graduate. Rebecca (our mother) was a wiz at doing long division in her head up to 4 numbers at a time. This is a fact that we have marveled at for most of our lives.
Rebecca left her home at a very young age, she was in her early teens. When she left she ended up in Dalhousie where she got work as an ampair. The family that she was living with moved to Quebec City so when they moved to Quebec City Rebecca went with them until they got settled and got someone local to watch their children. During her time in Quebec City Rebecca got baptised. When she returned to N.B. she went back to Dalhousie. She there continued to look after children. Rebecca looked after a lot of the Bernatchez children and also a lot of other children. Rebecca also started cleaning offices and houses. Over the years she worked for many different people, some for a long period of time and some for a short period of time, Here are a few names of some of the people we remember her working for: The Flanns, Dr. Rice, Dr.. Savan, The Elias, Mrs. Branch, Krinsole, The Cormiers, Mr. Tingley (lawyer), Dr. McPherson, The Thompsons, The Thomas', Litwins, Dr. Sagado. Dr. Zachery, Dr. McDonald and a few other lawyers and Doctors, she also did the Henderson's both home and office building.
Rebecca's means of getting to some of these places was a bicycle. She used to say that the freedom of zipping along on the bike gave her time to think and helped her to relax.
Rebecca enjoyed nature, loved watching the birds, her favorites were: a canary, blue jay, cardinal and the humming bird.
Her favorite flowers were: forget me knots, and carnations.
Her favorite sports to watch were: Hockey, baseball, horse racing, curling and sometimes golf. if you asked her what her favorite team was she would reply at times with "that is for me to know and you to find out".
Her favorite t.v. shows were a select few from mystery to game shows, to John Wayne movies and all western shows.
Rebecca never learnt to drive a car because the one time she did try to learn with her uncle, they got into a fender bender and she was quite shook up
and never wanted to try again.
Rebecca made 31 blood donations during her life time. She also worked for elections Canada for many years. Rebecca was also a lady who knew her bible very wll and also had her own beliefs.
Later on Rebecca met our father Lionel and married him on December 29th, 1952. Lionel worked for the Canadian National Railway on the extra gangs. Lionel traveled a lot, and mom kept doing her work.
Rebecca and Lionel had 6 children they are: Rebecca, Donna. Debbie-Anne, Bonnie, Joseph and Christina. She later adopted Kenneth. Donna and Joseph died at a very young age.
Rebecca and Lionel also had 7 grandchildren they are:: Richard, Alexander, Kirk, Andrew, Jeannine, Rebecca, Kayla
Rebecca also had 3 great grandchildren maybe more not sure if her grandson Richard has any children they are: Chloe, Faith, Keegan
Mom was very devoted to her family. Her children were always her first priority and her relationships with her family was as individual as each of us were. Mom instilled in us a strong belief of self worth, independence, and what some consider to be old fashioned values. These we have in turn tried to pass on to our own children. Mom was also really devoted to her late husband Lionel for she was widowed at the age of 40 and never re-married.
She honored his memory and spent the rest of her life alone without the love of a man but had her children there always.
Rebecca was also the unofficial keeper of family history. She knew and kept a lot of said history to herself unless the person or people involved wanted the information.
So in short to sum it all up our mother Rebecca was a smart, hardworking, trustworthy, quiet. warm hearted, friendly, kind, strict when she felt that we needed it. Rebecca also believed we are all created equal no matter what.
