Rose Mary Dion was an expressive, optimistic, individual. To everyone around her, she seemed to be eternally happy, and she willingly shared that joy with anyone whose life she touched. For Rose, bringing out the best in any situation was as easy as offering a smile, a witty remark or the twinkle of an eye. Rose really mastered the art of living and had great fun in doing so.
Rose was born on April 4, 1915 at Hotel Dieu hospital, Campbellton, NB. Her parents were Elizabeth and Robert Carr. Rose was raised in EELRiver, Charlo, Richardville and Campbellton NB. Even as a child, Rose had the ability to lift the spirits of those around her. She was raised to be warm, caring and friendly.
Always a good playmate, Rose was easygoing and fun loving. She managed to lighten the mood wherever she was, even during family squabbles. She seemed to have a knack for bringing compromise and erasing tense situations around the house. Due to a generous dose of common sense, Rose managed to find a satisfying solution to basic problems. Rose was raised with 11 siblings. She had 7 brothers:Everett,Gordon,Henry,Leonard,Joe, Gerald and Clifford ( she is survived by Cliford and Gerald) and 4 sisters:Charlotte, Elva,Evangeline and Cecilia.
Rose had an outgoing personality, a lively imagination and a mellowed enthusiasm for life. As a result, Rose experienced a rather active childhood, and this suited her very well. She took part in fishing with her dad and brothers , baseball, swimming and hiking. The family was poor so Rose did not have the opportunity to participate in organized activities but she enjoyed the great outdoors with family and friends in her neighborhood. She liked to help her mother around the house and she learned to sew at a young age as well as knit .
Rose was drawn to individuals and used her adaptable and outgoing personality to develop new relationships, ever widening her circle of friends. Whether it was a story, a joke, a song or just plain fooling around, Rose was always right at home among her friends. She especially enjoyed her friends Eldridge and Irene Roy, Norma and Leslie Roy, Thelma Duguay and Rose Power. Rose loved sharing life and having her home filled with people she knew. She was always up for a game of cards, either Rook or auction 45.
Rose was very easy to approach. On October 19th 1942 Rose exchanged wedding vows with Armand Marie Gedeon Dion at Our lady of Lourdes church of Atholville, NB. She tried hard not to impose on her spouse. She was always sensitive to other people’s feelings, and that was especially true in marriage.
Perhaps the reason Rose related so well to children was the fact that she had the ability to be just a “kid at heart” and this helped her in raising her own children. Rose was blessed with two children, one son Maurice and one daughter Claudette. They were also blessed with four grandchildren, Nell, Norah, Emma and Jorja. Rose had the ability to focus her attention on the present moment. If she was spending time with the kids, that’s where all of her attention was directed. Rose's compassionate side prevented her from being a strict disciplinarian, and she could turn just about any situation into a playful, learning experience. She could spend hours entertaining them with fun and creative play. In fact, Rose had a knack for turning some of those nasty old chores into games. One of her favorite ways to get her children to help polish the hardwood floors was to give them their Dad's old wool socks and have them slip and slide on the waxed floor.
In life, Rose was a “people person.” She had a very successful way of dealing effectively with others, and her enthusiasm and energy were contagious. When dealing with various projects and problems, Rose used her common sense and trusted her experiences to uncover the correct answer. Rose was a down to earth thinker and an excellent problem solver. Her primary occupation was Housewife and loving mother. She was employed prior to her marriage as a housekeeper.
Rose enjoyed her leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. Rose liked creating and making things. Her favorite pursuits were sewing, knitting and gardening , fishing with her hubby, hunting partridge in the fall with friends. Rose was also something of a sports fan watching her favorite hockey team, the Canadiens , watching baseball, and curling. Rose was always willing to share her interests with others.
Rose loved to participate in winter snowshoeing and thoroughly enjoyed the pleasure of being around other people. Rose relished the opportunity to enjoy a cup of hot tea boiled over an open fire outdoors. Recreational sports also included fishing and hunting, camping, canoeing, swimming, and bowling.
Rose was always ready to join in the fun and add her flair and energy to an organization. Because of her personality, her humor, and her ability to get along with everyone, Rose's service was greatly valued by the organizations to which she belonged. Throughout the years, Rose was an active member of the Girl guide mouvement where she served as Brown Owl for the brownies in her village for several years. She also was part of the ladies group at the church helping out in the kitchen for special events, Christmas teas and fundraisers. She particularly enjoyed her years bowling with the Seniors' Bowling league and going to card parties.. She was charitable, kind and giving, qualities that made her a natural volunteer. Politically, Rose was always one who choose to select the man over a political party.
Vested with a deep concern for spiritual development, Rose recognized that her faith was important to her throughout her life. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes parish for her entire adult life.
It is no surprise that Rose loved to travel and to visit new and different places. She was curious about other parts of the world and loved the real life adventure that came from visiting them. Favorite vacations included many summers of camping on PEI and Val Comeau provincial Park with her grandchildren, a trip to New York with Maurice and Kay to visit cousins, a trip with seniors to Isle Saint Pierre and Miquelon, watching hot air baloons in the Gatineau and a trip to Florida. For many years, after she purchased her first car, a blue Beaumont, Rose and Armand traveled to Montreal in September to watch their favorite baseball team.
Rose was an animal lover but never owned a pet. She was kept busy over the years with dog sittting for her 2 children.
Rose lived her whole adult life in Atholville where her husband Armand worked at the Fraser mill for 46 years. Rose moved from her little house on the hill in Atholville to Bursey Towers , a seniors residence in Campbellton when she was 93 years old . Rose enjoyed her little apartment and continued to make new friends while she stayed in touch as best she could with her old friends. Her hearing aids were the bane of her exixtence but she was a trouper and tried hard not to let that hold her back.
Rose passed away on December 11, 2011 at At The Village Nursing Home in Campbellton,NB. Rose had a long life and she made those around her happy. In her latter years she especially cherished the visits of her grandaughters. She is survived by her son Maurice, her daughter Claudette , her 6 grandchildren: Gregory, Donny and Carolyn Dion, and Michael, Charles and Patrick Redstone and two brothers, Clifford and Gerald. Services were held at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Atholville,NB. Rose was laid to rest in the catholic cemetary in Tide Head NB.
Rose brought joy to all of those around her. She never had a mean bone in her body. She loved to have a good time and was an eternal optimist, always looking on the bright side of things. She loved to share her energy, wit, and her zest for all of her activities with her friends and family. Rose Mary Dion lived life to its fullest and made everyone around her happier just for knowing her. She will be remembered with a smile.
