Lucius Cornelia “Connie” Baker went to be with our Lord on January 4, 2024. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Wren “Dub” Baker. She is survived by her daughter, Linda, & 3 sons, John (Randi), Mike (Lynn), & David (Susan). She also left a legacy of 11 grandchildren & 30 great-grandchildren.
Connie was born in a small one-bedroom home in Mt Calm, TX on June 23, 1926 to Daniel & Lucius Trussell. She had one older brother, three older sisters, & one younger sister all who have preceded her in death. She was raised in a working-class family where each family member was expected to get a job to bring in money for the family so she learned to work hard from an early age. She grew up in the Great Depression where she learned frugality & how to make use of all things. She also learned the value of an education as she always felt this was the way to a better life. Growing up in tough times she learned how to persevere difficult times & developed a strong will to survive.
She had a close-knit family where family reunions around Christmas Time were always filled with laughter & love.
She met her husband of 69 years while attending Southwestern Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. Motivated by a desire to work with Christian people she studied secretarial skills with the hope of working in a church office. She met Dub who was also attending the Seminary. At first, she rebuffed Dub’s advances because she did not want to be a preacher’s wife. After he assured her that he was going to be a college professor & not a Baptist preacher, she agreed to go out on a date with him. And the rest, as they say, was history. However, Dub’s dream to be a college professor was interrupted by the necessity of providing for his new wife, and so began his career as a Baptist minister.
Connie was a faithful preacher’s wife for 68 years & stayed home to raise her 4 children. She loved her family very much & dedicated her life to caring for them. Somewhere between Mike & David she lost one thru a miscarriage, & she always talked about looking forward to meeting this child one day in Heaven.
Connie was very passionate about her love for her family. We never doubted how much she loved us & how much she sacrificed for us. We also knew that she was very proud of each one of us.
Because education was a high family value for which Dub & Connie shared they labored very hard to provide a college education for each of their children. All 4 graduated from Baylor University, as did Dub. For many years one of their greatest joys was going to back to Waco every Saturday for football games (they had season tickets). They both loved Baylor & thought it was a bright Christian light to the secular world.
Another passion of Dub & Connie’s was to travel, & they travelled to just about every country around the globe until they got too old to do so. Even after Dub retired from the ministry, he continued to work full time at various churches around the Dallas area as an interim pastor. Connie was right by his side for every church service, Bible study, potluck dinner, etc.
The family takes great comfort in knowing that their mom is rejoicing with Dub & her other family members in the presence of our Lord.
A funeral service for Lucius will be held Sunday, January 7, 2024 at 11:00 AM at Metrocrest Funeral Home, 1810 N Perry Rd, Carrollton, Texas 75006.
