Born in Flagstaff, AZ, he graduated from Arizona State University with degrees in finance and languages; from Thunderbird School of International Management with a degree in international banking. He worked in that field as a treasurer and manager. He had been a foreign exchange student in France and had received a Hugh O'Brian Youth Foundation scholorship. He spoke five languages and traveled and lived in several countries. He was a member of the LDS Church.
