John was born on July 16, 1940, in Flint, Michigan, to Harrison and Thelma Weeks. On November 16, 1958, he married Thelma Elaine Coats. John joined the Army in 1958 and spent eight years stationed in Georgia, Virginia, and Germany. After his tour, John and Thelma returned to Vassar, Michigan, with their children, Martin, Patrick, Janice, and Judy. In 1968, the family moved to their home on Barnes Road in Millington, Michigan, where they began their family adventure tending to an apple orchard, gardening, and caring for small farm animals. In 1979, John and Thelma moved their family to Arizona, where they spent many years raising their children in Mesa and Apache Junction. When they became empty nesters, they moved to their land in Eloy, Arizona.
Throughout his life, John had a deep passion for gardening. He lovingly tended to his fruit trees, raspberry bushes, grapevines, and strawberry patches, providing an abundance of fruits and vegetables for his family throughout the seasons. Between his garden and Thelma’s skill in canning and freezing, they were able to preserve their harvest and the food from their small animals year-round. These traditions of gardening and food preservation became cherished family memories, bringing everyone together.
After moving to Arizona, John continued to pursue his gardening passion, learning new methods for growing in the desert climate. His gardens flourished at his home in Eloy, Arizona.
John was also an avid fixer and builder, always at work in his garage. He was an electrician, as well as a car, tractor, small engine, and television repairman. He could fix just about anything and took pride in passing his skills onto his children, teaching them how to repair things before discarding them.
Carpentry was another passion. John built picnic tables, remodeled his home, and created toys and chairs for his grandchildren. Largely self-taught, he had a talent for crafting items that he enjoyed placing around his yard or gifting to others.
John was instrumental in the construction of the Estrella Community Church in Eloy, Arizona, contributing both his project management skills and craftsmanship. He even handcrafted the church’s first pulpit.
