James William Laske Sr., age 80, passed away on July 14, 2023, surrounded by family, leaving behind a profound void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. He was born in Detroit, Michigan, on October 24, 1942, to the late Steven and Margarite Laske.
Growing up, James shared a special bond with his siblings, Steve, Larry, Tom, Phil, Kathy, Joe, Vicky, Michael, and Michelle. Their collective memories and experiences formed a deep and lasting connection. His extended family consisted of numerous inlaws, nieces, nephews, and friends who enjoyed family functions such as reunions, holidays, and special occasions.
James received his education from Pittsford High School, Michigan, and was a proud graduate of the Class of 1960. After graduation, James went to Ferris College until signing up for the United States Navy. He served 4 years regular duty including a tour in Vietnam. He then embarked on an apprenticeship in Tool & Die at Jackson College, further honing his skills.
On July 31, 1964, James married the love of his life, Charlotte Laske, in Seattle, Washington. Their union was blessed with five children: James William Jr. (Kathy), Joey Lee, Chad Eric (Unha), Mark Anthony (Akbar), and Jacquelyn Alice (Jesse). James was a devoted husband and father, providing unwavering love and support to his family throughout their lives.
Professionally, James worked for General Motors until his retirement in 2001. However, his dedication to serving others extended beyond his civilian career. He honorably served in the Navy, achieving the rank of Senior Chief, and dedicated an impressive 28 years of service to his country, most of which was served at the Battle Creek Michigan Naval Base.
In his leisure time, James indulged in his passion for creating DriftWood Art. His workshop, located off the garage, served as a haven for his artistic expressions, and his creations brought joy and inspiration to those who admired his talent. He loved fishing, especially his annual trips to Canada with his brothers. A history buff, he spent his spare time learning about time and places that interested him.
James was preceded in death by his beloved parents and 6 siblings, leaving behind cherished memories of their time together. He is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte, their four sons, one daughter, ten grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter: Jared, Mikaila, Nathan, CJ, Tanner, Anessa, Jessica, Rachel, Izabelle, Izaiah and Malia. We must also include his best friends, Ralph and Jane Holawa, who he loved dearly. James will be deeply missed by his family and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A visitation to honor James's life will be held on July 17, 2023 at Sticklin Funeral Home in Centralia, Washington. Full military service for burial is scheduled for August at the National Cemetery in Covington, Washington.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to Disabled American Veterans, a cause close to James's heart.
As we mourn the loss of James William Laske Sr., let us also celebrate the beautiful life he lived, the love he shared, and the memories that will forever remain etched in our hearts. May his soul find eternal peace, and may we find solace in knowing that his spirit will continue to guide and inspire us.
