February 1, 1932 — January 21, 2025
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Edward Johnson, who departed this world on January 21, 2025, at the age of 92. A devoted family man, veteran, and friend to many, he touched the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Joseph was born February 1, 1932 in Astoria, Oregon. He grew up in a loving household, imbibing the values of hard work, kindness, and humor. He attended Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, where he not only pursued his studies but also excelled in athletics, playing both baseball and basketball, taking both teams on to win state. His passion for sports was matched only by his devotion to his country, leading him to enlist in the Navy in 1950. Joe served valiantly during the Korean War, a chapter of his life he spoke of with pride, honoring the camaraderie and duty that defined his service.
It was during a typing class that he met the love of his life, Joanne Johnson. With a twinkle in his eye and a heart full of determination, he asked his teacher to introduce him to her, boldly declaring that she was his “type.” Their love blossomed, and they were married in March of 1956, embarking on a journey of love that would last until Joanne’s passing in 2014. Professionally, Joe enjoyed a fulfilling career as a Sales Representative for Pfizer, where he was known for his integrity and dedication. Even in retirement, Joe remained active in his community, relishing the moments spent dancing and socializing at the senior center, Elks Club, and VFW.
Joseph is preceded in death by his beloved wife Joanne' parents Oscar and Ruth (Elkins); brothers Roger and Bill Johnson; and daughter Vicki Johnson. His legacy continues through his children, Steven Johnson, Tamara Cox, and Shelly Johnson. They, along with his six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, cherished the time spent with him.
Joseph’s unwavering humor remained a constant companion throughout his life, bringing joy to those around him even as he faced the trials of aging. His ability to find laughter in the everyday is a memory his family and friends will hold dear.
Joseph will be laid to rest at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon, where he will be honored for his service to our nation and his love for his family. A Celebration of Life will be announced at a later date.
Arrangements are in the care of Sticklin Funeral Chapel in Centralia, Washington. May he rest in peace, forever in our hearts.
