Lawrence Carl Hatfield, 94, of Centralia passed away on January 14, 2016 at Providence Centralia Hospital with his step-daughter, Susy, at his bedside. Carl was born to Francis and Ruth (Pettyjohn) Hatfield on October 5, 1921, in Prescott, WA.
Carl graduated from Dayton High School in 1941. He attended college for a brief time, then decided to join the United States Air Force and was eventually assigned to a supply squadron in England, which he enjoyed. He had many stories of his time in the military. He left the Air Force in 1951.
Carl married Loucille Plock in 1945. They became parents of two sons, Larry Dean and Lewis Gene. Carl and Loucille were eventually divorced. In 1951, Carl met and Married Ethel P West and helped to raise Ethel’s children, Robert West Jr. and Ada P “Susy” West. The family moved to Oregon City, Oregon in 1952 and bought a small farm. Carl worked for Crown Zellerbach Paper Mill. In 1953 after a near fatal accident at the mill, Carl and Ethel became devout Christians, eventually becoming ordained ministers in the Full Gospel Fellowship, and even pastored a small church in Ridgefield, Washington, where they lived for several years.
Carl worked for the U.S. Postal Service and worked his way up to Postmaster position in Woodland, from which he did retire in 1981. Shortly thereafter he and Ethel moved to Centralia. They stayed active in church fellowship for many years until Ethel’s health began to decline. Even after Ethel’s death in 2009, Carl stayed dedicated to his faith and continued to teach God’s word to any and all who would listen.
Carl was the kindest, most patient and gentle natured person that anyone could know on this earth. Carl’s passing will leave an irreplaceable void in our family and the community that knew and loved him.
