Alta Shaver St. Clair, of Mint Hill, NC, passed away Sunday morning, August 2, 2015, the week of her 98th birthday. Born August 8, 1917, in Taylorsville, NC, she was daughter to the late Ernest A. and Bessie Fincannon Shaver. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Thelma Johnson and Mabel Watts, her husband, Ed St. Clair, and her son, Sam. She leaves behind two sons and their wives, Ray and Ginny, and Johnny and Gerri, four grandchildren, Johnny, Cathryn, Stephanie and Michael, and four great-grandchildren, Genevieve, Emma, Cora and Gabriella.
Alta was raised in Taylorsville and attended Mars Hill College. She married Edward St. Clair in 1945 and had three sons. The family relocated from Taylorsville to Charlotte in 1959. Alta and her husband were married 38 years at the time of his passing. They were members of the Statesville Road Baptist Church.
Alta loved spending time with her family and friends, cooking, gardening, sewing and reading. Much like her late husband, she had a good sense of humor and always had a smile and laugh ready, despite her sons’ relentless efforts to rile her up. Her grandchildren enjoyed snapping green beans with her on the porch, exploring the wonder and mysteries of her “junk room,” and joining her in singing Christmas carols while her son, Sam, provided beautiful piano accompaniment. She is loved and will be missed.
Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from 10:00 until 11:00 am Saturday, August 8, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road in Mint Hill, with a funeral service to immediately follow at 11:00 am in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Dr. Ron Tippens will officiate. Interment will follow at 2:00 pm Saturday, in Taylorsville Cemetery, Taylorsville, NC.
