Carole Jean Andrews, age 80, of Matthews, North Carolina and formerly of Hartland, Michigan, peacefully passed from this life on May 18, 2016 after a lengthy battle with cancer. She was born on December 26, 1935 to the late Robert and Helen (Monschein) McDougall in Goshen, Indiana.
Carole is survived by her husband John, four daughters – Jeanne Adkins (Donald) of Kings Mountain, NC; Jill Crist (Rick) of Fort Wayne, IN; Karen Southard of Matthews, NC; Sandy Sneath (William) of Hartland, MI- and six granddaughters – Allison Michaud (Ryan), Julie Adkins, Katherine Southard, Nicole Crist, Ariona Sneath, and Destini Sneath. She is also survived by three siblings: her brother, Norman Mcdougall (Jeanne) of Huntersville, NC; her brother Cam McDougall (Linda) of Brea, CA; and her sister Heather Schermerhorn (Edward) of Yorktown, IN; as well as many nephews and nieces.
After graduating from Goshen High School, Carole went to study at Michael Reese Hospital in Chicago, Illinois to be an x-ray technician.
Carole married John, the love of her life, in 1957 while John was attending Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan. John eventually moved the family to Hartland, Michigan where Carole and John raised their four daughters. She was a loving mother to her daughters and a dedicated wife to John while he owned and managed the Oasis Truck Plaza. The family belonged to the First Presbyterian Church in Howell, Michigan for many years.
While in Michigan, Carole and John were season ticket holders for the University of Michigan and enjoyed attending many football games, including two Rose Bowl appearances, and basketball games, including several trips to the NCAA Final Four.
After John retired and sold the truck stop, Carole and John moved to Matthews, North Carolina to be close to their daughters and grandchildren and to enjoy the milder weather. Carole continued her healthy lifestyle by working out at the Siskey YMCA over the years. In the later years she was lovingly known as the lady with the “tank” (her oxygen tank backpack) as she visited with everyone and walked on the treadmill.
Carole enjoyed playing golf with John until ailments prevented them from participating. She and John were regular attendees of the Wells Fargo Championship for over 10 years.
As to not forget, she introduced herself as “CAROL with an E”. She has never met a stranger and loved having conversations!
Her family would like to thank the excellent and loving medical care she received from every person at Carolinas Medical Center. As well as, the loving and devoted care from Hospice & Palliative Care Charlotte Region.
A private memorial service celebrating Carole’s life will be held for family at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel. A reception will be at the Polo Clubhouse (2727 Polo Club Blvd; Matthews, NC 28105) on Monday, the 23rd of May, 2016 from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm.
