Charlie a man of deep faith, and unwavering joy, entered into the presence of his Savior on February 13th, 2025 at the age of 97, surrounded by his loving family. He lived a life marked by devotion to his Savior, his beloved sweetheart - Sara, his family, his grandchildren, and to all who were blessed to know him. As a husband, he loved fiercely and faithfully; as a father and grandfather, he led with wisdom, patience, and a joyful spirit.
Born on December 24th, 1927, in Wadesboro, NC, to John and Ora Horne, Charlie enjoyed a simple childhood surrounding by six siblings. One of life’s simplest joys for Charlie was candy—a love he inherited honest from his Mama, who often sent him to the store with a nickel in his pocket for a bag of sweet treats. Charlie had a deep love for his Daddy - a well-known figure in Wade Mill who was devoted to preaching and spreading the gospel of Christ throughout Anson and surrounding counties. Charlie loved his parents deeply and lived out Ephesians 6:2-3 to honor his father and mother so his days on earth would be long.
Charlie later served his country as a medic in the Air Force. Stationed in Nashville, TN, Charlie spent many Saturday nights at the Grand Ole Opry. He was well known for sneaking backstage to say hello to his sweetheart back home on the radio waves. His family will forever cherish his many stories from the service and his connections with many country music legends.
From the moment he laid eyes on Sara he knew she was the one. Charlie spotted Sara for the first time at the local Dixie Home, nudged his coworker and proclaimed that he was going to marry her. Just two years later, Charlie would indeed marry Sara; together they enjoyed 72 years of marriage. During those years, they were blessed to travel the world and to create a home filled with laughter, kindness, and a steadfast commitment to the Lord.
After moving to Charlotte, Charlie and Sara joined Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Charlie faithfully served as a Deacon and an Usher for many years. He had a way of making everyone feel valued. His faith was not just something he spoke of—it was the very foundation of his life. Guiding his family and all who met him towards Christ.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and humor carried on by his sweetheart Sara, his children Phillip Horne, Treva Helms (Michael), and Tamara Surratte (Derek). Grandchildren: Stephanie Taylor (Lance), Justin Helms, Natalie Helms, Landon Surratte, and Logan Surratte and a host of extended family and friends who were forever changed by knowing him. Though our hearts ache in his absence, we rejoice in knowing he is now in Glory, where his joy is complete. His family looks forward with great anticipation of reuniting with him in Heaven.
Those left to cherish his memory will do so by remembering his infectious smile and dimples, his goofy facial expressions, his love of bluegrass, his jokes, and most of all, his love for the Lord and for people.
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 10:00-11:30, with the memorial service to follow.
For those unable to attend the service in-person, virtual attendance may be accessed by visiting Charlie's online memorial tribute at McEwenMintHillChapel.com and selecting the "Join Livestream" icon on the service section.
