

Harold ‘Darnell’ Hammack Jr., 77 of Charlotte, NC, died May 14, 2026 in his home surrounded by love. Darnell was born in Charleston, WV to Margaret (Means) and Harold Darnell Hammack, Sr., and was the oldest of five. Darnell graduated from Stonewall Jackson High School (Charleston, WV), class of ’67.
Darnell worked in the automotive industry for most of his career, followed by many years as an insurance appraiser.
Darnell enjoyed cars, NASCAR, bonsai trees, yard work and driving just about anywhere. He was always willing to help a friend or neighbor. Darnell was also well known for long talks in the driveway or parking lot - talks that often included “one more thing”.
Darnell frequently greeted women he knew with a simple “hey girl” and said goodbye with a “be good, girl”. He loved his granddaughters and always brought a smile to their face when greeting them with a “hello darlin’” in the voice of Conway Twitty.
Darnell was preceded in death by his parents Margaret and Harold, and son, Grant. Darnell is survived by those whom loved him, wife, Tanya Silverthorne, daughter Kara (Gavin) Off, daughter-in-law Ashley Hammack, Mark Silverthorne (Brandi), and grandchildren Olivia (23), Eleanor (17), Adeline (14), Wyatt (5), Joshua (26), Jackson (15), Griffin (11), and Finely (3). Darnell is also survived by his ex-wife Diana Hammack, and siblings Jennifer Portz, John Hammack, Tim Hammack, and Kim Ward and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Robinson Presbyterian Church May 20, 2026 @ 2pm. Refreshments to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trees Charlotte.
