Douglas William Rennie was born on January 13, 1947 in Glasgow, Scotland. He passed away on July 5th, 2021 in Mint Hill, North Carolina at age 74. He is survived by his wife, Rhenida, his daughter, Nicole, his son-in-law, Griffin, his grandson, Jack, and his granddaughter, who will arrive in October. In addition, he is survived by brother, Graham (Karen) Rennie of Lewiston, Michigan; brothers-in-law, Larry (Belvia) Bennett of Clayton, GA; Jerry (Pat) Bennett and Ricky (Cindy) Bennett of Cumming, GA; and sister-in-law, Sandra Bennett of Cumming GA. Nieces, nephews, and cousins also survive him.
He immigrated to this country at age 6 on the Queen Mary, entering the country through Ellis Island prior to its closure. He became a United States citizen in December of 1967 in order to receive high security clearance in the U.S. Navy. He was proud of his service in the Navy from 1965 to 1969, during which time he served tours in the Mediterranean and Caribbean.
Although he was a patriotic citizen of the United States, he never lost his love and pride for his homeland of Scotland. He maintained close ties with his Scottish relatives both in the US and abroad and visited Scotland several times throughout the years, most recently in the summer of 2017.
He grew up in the Detroit area and was an avid sports fan and athlete. He was a star athlete at Utica High School in football, baseball, and swimming. He loved sports all his life, especially his favorite teams. On Saturdays in the fall, he could always be found cheering on the University of Michigan and the Georgia Bulldogs football teams. When baseball season rolled around, he would cheer for both of his home teams, the Detroit Tigers and the Atlanta Braves. He also loved hockey and the Detroit Red Wings. After his retirement, he enjoyed playing golf with his buddies every week, and is especially proud of his hole-in-one.
Doug was a regional distribution manager for major magazines, such as Reader's Digest and TV Guide. He was beloved as a boss for his humor, wit, and compassion occasionally tinged with gruffness. He was always ready to help a coworker, neighbor, friend, or animal in need and volunteered with the Humane Society of Georgia after his retirement in the fall of 2007.
Doug met the love of his life in September of 1981 and wed on September 19, 1982. Doug and Rhenida loved to travel together and visited many states in the US. Some of their favorites were Maine, New York, and the Gulf Coast, where they travelled many times. They also travelled internationally, visiting twenty countries across Central America, North America, Europe, and the Caribbean. He discovered a love for cruising in 2000 and went on several cruises in the Caribbean, three in Europe, and one in Alaska. He especially loved his trip to Alaska in 2010.
Doug was a devoted husband and father who always kept us laughing. He always knew exactly what to say and was always ready with a witty remark. He knew how to make us feel loved by finding the perfect gift, taking us on a trip out to lunch, or just being there when we needed him. When his grandson Jack was born in 2019, he was immediately smitten and couldn't wait to see him play football someday. He loved spending time with Jack, and Jack loved spending time with his Papa.
We will miss him every day.
