She is survived by her loving daughter, Robin Abernathy, with whom she had lived her last 30 years; one granddaughter, McNeely Abernathy; and one sister, Betty Houston Goin of Greenwood, SC. She was predeceased by her parents, Rupert McNeely and Willie Robinson Houston.
Retired from Matthews Elementary School after 20 years of service as a Teacher Assistant, Ellen brought creativity to the classrooms she so loved. She was a long- time member of the First Baptist Church of Matthews and Pawleys Island Community Church and enjoyed using her musical talent in the choir and community, singing and touring with the Melody Makers of Matthews Methodist Church.
Upon moving to the Anderson area, the highlight of Ellen’s week was spending time with her friends at Senior Solutions.
Ellen’s passion for the Atlanta Braves would rival any Braves’ fan. Every game, she would sport a Braves Jersey before turning on the TV to watch her team. This enthusiasm was highlighted by a meeting with John Smoltz last year!
Ellen loved greatly and was greatly loved. She will be missed by all who knew her.
A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 16th at 1:00pm at Matthews Historic Cemetery in Matthews, NC.
