In 1973, he graduated from Lima Senior High and on May 17, 1975, married Tamara Lynn Carroll, with whom he would spend 50 wonderful years. After graduating from Findlay College, Gary had a decades-long career in marketing. However, his favorite role has always been “Grandpa.” Gary loved his six grandchildren and was active in their lives, serving as after school chauffeur and favorite-food caterer.
He is survived by his wife, Tammie, of Matthews, North Carolina; children, Kati and Bryan Goode of Matthews, and Shawn and Jennifer Hersey of Houston, Texas; his grandchildren, Allison, Austin, Abby, Audrey, Rowan, and Isla; his brother and sister-in-law, Chris and Tracey Hersey of Cincinnati, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 29, 2025, at 1 p.m. at Cross & Crown Lutheran Church in Matthews.
