

He was born on August 5, 1947, to the late Miller “Gene” and Ellen Shu Freeman “Jakie” Newton.
Formerly of Charlotte, North Carolina, Harry attended Garinger High School where he graduated in 1965. Harry was known for many things including his wit, being a great storyteller, and always ready to respond with a great comeback. He also had a wonderful personality with a love and care for all animals and having a laughter that was very contagious. Harry also had an ability to be very funny without ever having to try. When it came to hobbies and interests, Harry had many enjoyments in his life. He was an avid fisherman who enjoyed setting records for his striped bass fish catching. Harry also enjoyed playing golf and could often be found on the courses at Larkhaven Golf Club, Eastwood Golf Club, and Charlotte National Golf Club. He also enjoyed riding around town and visiting people and was an active member of the VFW Post 9488. More importantly, Harry loved his family above all else and was a fierce protector when it came to them. He enjoyed the many precious memories that were made with his family including the many fishing trips with his grandsons on Clarks Hill Lake. Harry was one who was always encouraging you to check on your friends and family lovingly and often. He was a man who stood firm in his principles, was deeply respected, and will be missed by all who knew him.
Along with his parents, Harry is preceded in death by his grandmother, Minna Belle Thompson Shu “Belle” and his grandfather, Rufus Allen Shu “Bub”. He is survived by his loving wife, Violet Blanchard Newton; children, Denise Newton and Jennifer Newton; grandchildren, Luke Russ, Blake Russ, and Jacqueline Bellorin; and his precious dogs, Peewee and Dolly, who lovingly adored him.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, April 2, 2026, from 2:00 pm until 3:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel located at 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, North Carolina. A service to celebrate Harry’s life will be held following the visitation at 3:15 pm with burial immediately following the service at Sunset Memory Gardens.
