

He was born on December 21, 1927 in Lancaster, SC to the late Hall and Vera Belk Carter.
J.D. attended Mineral Springs School. He received a full scholarship to NC State but chose to enlist in the Army. After being discharged, he worked in the floor covering industry later starting Carter Floors with business partner Herman Pinion. He and wife Jane were faithful members of Philadelphia Presbyterian and were active members of the Fred Brown Sunday School Class. J.D. also enjoyed gardening, traveling and square dancing with Jane.
In addition to his parents, J.D. is preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Mary Jane Thomas Carter; son, James Donald Carter, Jr. “Don”; sisters, Margaret Sikes and Inez Phillips.
Mr. Carter is survived by his sons, Tom Carter (Linda) and Norman Carter (Faye); grandchildren, Tripp Carter (Caroline), Rachel Carter, Katherine Carter, and Lauren Austin; great grandchildren, Aiken and Luke Carter; sisters, Edna Bunn, Kathleen Horton, and Ann Crump (Ralph).
A visitation will be held from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm on Thursday, May 4, 2017 at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227 with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 pm. Interment to follow at Sunset Memory Gardens.
