

James P. Grier “Farmer Grier”, 81, of Matthews, passed away at home surrounded by his family on June 13, 2013. He was born in Mecklenburg County on April 27, 1932 to the late N.C. and Mary Alice Grier. James has spent all of his life in Matthews. For the past 15 years, he has been growing and selling fresh vegetables from his farm, where he became famous for his tomatoes. Every fall, James enjoyed fishing at Cape Lookout.
James is predeceased by his four brothers and one sister. He is survived by his bride of 60 years, Sara Belk Grier and their daughters; Evelyn (Nelson) Bailey and Lynn (Andy) Ollis, two grandchildren; Jennifer (Matt) Everhart and Scott (Whitney) Bailey, two great grandsons; Aiden Everhart and Max Bailey, three sisters; Mary Alice Massey, Sara Ellen Wright and Betty Ann Hewett, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00pm on Monday, June 17, 2013 in the chapel at McEwen Funeral Services in Mint Hill 7428 Matthews Mint Hill Rd. Charlotte, NC 28227. The family will receive friends from 12:30 to 2:00pm prior to the service. Burial will follow at Matthews Historic Cemetery.
