

James Norman Sustar, 82, passed away on June 18, 2013 under the care of Peachtree Center in Gaffney, SC for the past 4 and a half years. Norman was born on December 13, 1930 in Mecklenburg County, to the late Hassie and Bleeka Sustar. Norman was always a man of generous spirit who valued honest hard work. He loved his church, Mt. Harmony Baptist, and cooked BBQ there for many years. He also enjoyed fishing with his two sons. Norman worked for Southern Engineering for 20 years. He owned and operated Sustar’s Grocery on the corner of Hwy 51 and Idlewild Rd. from 1968 to 1978. He then worked for Harkey and Associates from 1978 to 1995.
In addition to his parents, Norman was predeceased by two nephews, Danny and Daryl Cookson.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Frances Plowman Sustar. They were high school sweethearts and were married at Mt. Harmony Parsonage on June 30, 1950. He is also survived by his two sons, Randy (Sharon) and Tommy (Diane)Sustar, his step grandchildren; Shawn Casey and Terry Poteat, his great step grandchildren; Dylan Casey, Emilee and Olivia Poteat, his sister, Betty Cookson, his brother, Billy (Roenea) Sustar, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, June 22, 2013 from 1:00 to 2:00pm at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church 2817 Mt. Harmony Church Road Matthews, NC 28105 in the Fellowship Hall. Funeral services will be at 2:00pm in the Sanctuary. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials are sent to Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.
