Mrs. Joan Marie Pate Adams, born October 19, 1939, in Wilmington, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, devotion, and quiet strength. She was the beloved daughter of the late Reverend E. W. Pate and Elizabeth Johnson Pate. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, Hubert James Adams, Sr.
For more than 70 years, Joan served as a church pianist in various congregations, offering her gifts with quiet dedication and deep reverence. Her music was a ministry of its own—steady, comforting, and filled with the warmth of her spirit. Generations of worshippers found solace, joy, and inspiration through the hymns she played with such love. She also taught piano and was a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.).
Above all her roles, Joan was a passionate and loving mother. She poured her heart into her family, offering guidance rooted in faith, encouragement marked by gentleness, and love that never wavered. Her children remember her as their steady foundation—someone who celebrated their joys, supported their dreams, and stood beside them through every season of life.
She is survived by her children, Lisa Dean Adams, Hubert James Adams, Jr.(Tonya), Jonathan Pate Adams (Jennefer Kopczynski); sister, Elizabeth Dean Caldwell; grandchildren, Christopher, Charles, Kevin (Kathryn), Julianna (Marc Luchau), Megan (Alex Barnes), Cathryn and Anna Adams; and great grandchildren, Ezra, Spencer Adams, Charlotte and Clara Luchau.
The family will receive friends at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Charlotte, NC 28227, US, on March 6, 2026, from 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm.
