Jon was born December 16, 1958, in San Jose, California, to Steve and Aana Lisa Daniels (now Whatley). He moved with his mother and adoptive father, Orie Johnson, to North Carolina. He attended high school at Charlotte Country Day School (class of 1977), where he met his bride, Robirene (Robbie) Maddox.
He graduated from St. Andrews Presbyterian College in 1981 and married Robbie in 1982 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte. He attended law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Law and graduated in 1984. He practiced law in Matthews for many years until his retirement.
Jon loved his Savior and his family more than anything in the world. He spent nearly every hour of every day demonstrating Christ’s love by helping his family and friends. Everyone who knew him thought he was the smartest person in the world, and he was good at almost everything, except singing. When he got a phone call from family or friends needing help with anything—whether an insurance issue, a home repair, or yard and garden advice—he would drop everything to help. If it was broken, he could fix it. He was a perfectionist who lived with integrity, and he wanted to make sure everything was done to his standards, which at times were impossibly high. He loved traveling with his bride: to the mountains, to the beach, to anywhere else whim carried them. No matter where he was, sitting on the porch enjoying good food and wine with his loved ones brought a big, content smile to Jon’s face and the inevitable, “I love this!”
Jon was Robbie’s knight in shining armor and the love of her life. He was the indomitable voice of reason and champion for all of his family. His absence will be hard to bear until that time they all see him again.
Jon is survived by his beloved wife, Robbie, and his youngest son, Daniel; his daughter Jennifer, her husband, Seth, and their children, Cole, Aaron, and Caitlin; his son Jay, his wife, Chrystal, and their children, Keagan and Nathan; his daughter Heather, her husband, Scott, and their children, Allison and Sophie; his son Jon Jr. and his wife, Ellen; his mother, Aana Lisa Johnson Whatley; his father, Steve Daniels, and his wife, Marilyn; his brothers, Jim Johnson, Kris Johnson, and Mark Daniels; his sisters, Lisa Allen and Laura Stiehl; and Robbie's sister, Melisande Santos.
He was preceded in death by Orie Johnson and his daughters Catherine and Rebecca.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm Friday, October 15, 2021, at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel. A funeral service will be held 1:30 pm Saturday, at Christ Covenant Church in Matthews. Interment will follow in Historic Matthews Cemetery.
