Sharon was a strong Warrior for Christ, a devoted wife during her long marriage, a protective mother, and a doting GRANDmother. She was an honest, hard-working, dependable, giving, God-fearing woman who lived each day in service to the Lord, and to her family and friends. Everyone who knew Sharon agreed that she was a friend for life. She always, always had a smile and never met a stranger. To her, everyone was a brother or sister in Christ. Through daily devotions, she demonstrated her faith in the power of prayer – a commitment so unshakeable she knew the Will of God would never lead her to where the Grace of God would not protect her.
Sharon was born in Americus, Georgia on March 22, 1943. She graduated from Marietta High School and attended LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia. Later in her life she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Early Childhood Education from Kennesaw State University (1996). She was a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Education Honor Society. While teaching at Northside Elementary School in Dallas, Georgia she furthered her education at Piedmont College where she received a Masters of Arts in Education (2003). After high school and before she completed her steps to obtaining her two degrees, Sharon was a stay-at-home mom committed to creating a strong, structured, and loving home environment for her family. Upon entering the teaching profession, she spent her entire career at Northside Elementary where she taught kindergarten and shaped so many lives. Sharon did a great job understanding her students and loving their families. Sharon deeply held that completing her degrees later in life and going on to a years-long career in teaching were among her proudest, most fulfilling achievements in life.
Her love for Jesus was shown by her contagious smile, sweet spirit and the many roles she took on as a faithful member of Marietta (Georgia) First Church of the Nazarene since 1975. Over the years she was a church choir member, Share Choir chaperone, children & adult Sunday school teacher, board member, helped in the nursery, led ladies bible study, district assembly delegate and other various committees. One of Sharon’s favorite places to go was the Indian Springs Holiness Camp Meeting. She attended there regularly since 1975 and was a cabin owner. She participated in the Ladies’ Fellowship (served as president and secretary) and was part of various committees. After retiring from teaching, Sharon pursued her love of quilting with the Silver Comet Quilting Guild and Florida Quilting Bees Guild.
Sharon was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Thomas P. Dorman, Dorthea Y. Dorman, Phyllis Kelly and sisters in Christ Annie Maude Kenerly and Mary Nell Boling.
She is survived by her daughters Gretchen L. Hurley and son-in-law Bobby L. Hurley Jr. and DeAnn H. Johnson and son-in-law J. Kevin Johnson. Grandchildren Daniel J. Hurley, Andrew J. Hurley, Jason K. Johnson and Hannah B. Johnson.
