Marianne "Oma" Charlotte Yergeau, 95, of China Grove, North Carolina passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 8, 2023. She was born in Meerane, Germany on January 18, 1928 to Hermann and Gertrud Reichenbach.
Oma lived in Meerane until she went to Stuttgart, Germany in early 1950. She met her husband, Ovila Yergeau, in Stuttgart and moved to the United States in 1955. She was a seamstress by trade as was her mother. She worked for Snow White Cleaners for several years, she then went on to manage the alterations department for Ivey's when the South Park Mall opened in Charlotte, NC. She continued to lead alterations departments in Charlotte, NC area stores until she relocated to the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. While in Michigan, she was a dedicated Chrysler employee for 13 years. She entered full retirement from Burlington Coat Factory at the age of 82.
She was a member of Our Lady of Assumption with her husband until she moved to Michigan. She spent her years in retirement as a member in the group of German friends known as the Stammtish Ladies who became like family meeting regularly to chat about life, drink coffee, and muse on the happenings back home in Deutschland. Her greatest joy in life was her family and she was very proud of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren; and great nieces and nephews in Germany that she kept in constant contact with when her siblings passed away. She also kept in contact with her nieces and nephews on her husband's side of the family, many of whom reside in the Massachusetts area. She is known for the quilts, clothing, and other handcrafted items that she made and gave as gifts to others, her passion for gardening, along with her boisterous personality among friends and family.
Oma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, O.J. "Butch" Yergeau; her sons, Peter Yergeau and Hans-Jergen Yergeau; her siblings, Hildegard Buchmann, Rudolph Reichenbach, and Gerhard Reichenbach; and her son-in-law, Matthew Snopko.
