Born in York, South Carolina, Mary Sue grew up with a deep sense of purpose and compassion. A proud 1959 graduate of York High School, she was actively involved in Girls State and other student organizations. She continued her education at Winthrop College, graduating in 1963 and serving as Vice President of the Student Body—a reflection of her leadership and grace.
Mary Sue met the love of her life, Tony, in Lancaster, South Carolina. Together, they built a beautiful life in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they moved in 1971. Their journey was marked by devotion, faith, and family.
Three words that best describe Mary Sue are Christian, caring, and talented. Her faith was the cornerstone of her life. As a longtime member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School for many years, touching countless lives with her wisdom and warmth. She also served on the board of the YMCA, where she was honored as “Volunteer of the Year” for her tireless dedication.
Before Alzheimer’s began to affect her, Mary Sue was an active member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), and she found joy in reading and studying God’s Word. She expressed her creativity through sewing, cross-stitching, and crafting, and was known for her stunning wedding cakes that brought beauty and sweetness to many celebrations. Mary Sue also cherished time spent in the sun—especially at the beach, where she felt most at peace.
She will be remembered most for her unwavering love for the Lord, her inspiring witness, her nurturing spirit as a Sunday School teacher, and her generous heart in service to others.
Mary Sue is survived by her devoted husband, Tony R. Jones; her daughters, Michelle Yeldell (Will) and Angela Bivens; grandchildren, Jordan Love, Jackson Love (Samantha), Kayla Espana (Justin), Allyson Bivens, Stephanie Yeldell (Robert), Caroline Sanders (Ben), and James Yeldell; and great-grandchildren, Camille Yeldell, Gabriella Espana, and Naomi Sanders.
