Michael Marvin Fitzgerald

Michael was born on July 17, 1952, in Wells, Minnesota, to the late Leo Beno Schulenburg and Iris Rose Sweet Fitzgerald. He remained in Minnesota throughout his childhood and graduated from Winona High School.

In 1970, Michael moved to Charlotte, North Carolina, where he stayed throughout the remainder of his life. Shortly after this move, he met the love of his life, Karen Elliott, and they married on April 6, 1975. Together they had their beautiful daughter, Stephanie. Michael was a family man. He was always willing to share his love, patience and humor with his family. Karen and Stephanie couldn't have asked for a better father and husband. He was overjoyed to become a grandfather to his grandchildren, Zachary and Ashlyn and later, great grandfather to Payton. He prioritized being present and active in his grandchildren's lives. Those in his family would agree that Michael was a pillar of strength, kindness and love.

Michael spent his career as an electrician and a machinist. He was a hard worker who was dedicated to his craft, but he never missed out on an opportunity to joke with his colleagues. Michael and his family were active members at their church, Matthews Church of God. He was a friend to all who met him. His generosity and love of people was evident to everybody in his life.

In addition to his parents, Michael was predeceased by his sister, Lynn Miller. He is survived by his wife, Karen; daughter, Stephanie Fitzgerald Hobbs (Scott); grandchildren, Zachary Scott Hobbs (Angela) and Ashlyn Michelle Hobbs; great-granddaughter, Payton May Hobbs; brothers, Kevin Fitzgerald and Kerry Fitzgerald; and sister, Pam Weimer.

A visitation for Michael will be held Monday, August 19, 2024 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Matthews Church of God, 517 E John Street, Matthews, NC 28105, followed by a Celebration of Life at 1:00 PM. To celebrate and honor Michael's legacy, the family is requesting attendees not wear traditional black attire.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Michael's memory may be made to the IPF Foundation.
