MSgt Milton E. Gilmore, USAF Retired, of Matthews, North Carolina, finished his final enlistment as a soldier in God’s Christian Army on November 30, 2015. He was 86 years old. His spirit immediately went into the presence of his Lord Jesus, and we are sure that he asked if he might enlist in God’s heavenly army of angels to serve wherever He could continue to glorify God in whatever capacity that might be.
Milton was born in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, and relocated to Cedartown, Georgia, as a young boy. He joined the Air Force in 1946 and retired after 21 years. He settled in Charlotte and worked at AT&T as an electronics technician until his retirement in 1989.
Sgt. Gilmore is survived by his teenage sweetheart, best friend and wife, Barbara Tritt Gilmore. They married on 4 July 1948 at ages 18 (Milton) and 17. For 67 years, their anniversary has been celebrated by the entire nation with cookouts, homecomings and fireworks everywhere to celebrate the occasion. He was predeceased by his parents, William J. and Alice E. Gilmore, four brothers, two sisters and a grandson, Ryan K. Anderson. He is also survived by three daughters: Kathy Fain (Jim) of Charlotte, North Carolina; Tina Anderson (Wyatt) of Windermere, Florida; and Lisa Carnes (Donnie) of Acworth, Georgia; his seven grandchildren: Jennifer Fain Soprano (Travis), Timothy Fain (Katherine), Lynsay Anderson Horton (Matt), Taylor Anderson Brigham (Jake), Laura Anderson Foster (Travis), Christie Carnes Myers (Jason), and Katie Carnes. Great-grandchildren surviving are: Morgan Laney, Ryan Soprano, Aubrey Soprano, Lucas Fain, Jackson Fain, Emma Fain, Ellie Fain, Kyler Horton, Ryley Miller, Emma Foster, Stella Brigham, Elizabeth Myers and Judah Myers.
Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2015, at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Chapel in Mint Hill, North Carolina, with Pastor Danny Myers of First Baptist Church Indian Trail officiating at the service immediately following visitation. Interment will be in Forest Lawn East Mausoleum with full military honors following the funeral.
In lieu of flowers, Sgt. Gilmore requested that donations be sent to Gideons International who are daily obeying Jesus’ command to take His gospel to the ends of the earth. They donated and placed their two billionth Bible in the year 2015.
