

Born on November 25, 1944, in Buffalo, NY, Ray was the son of Anthony and Natalie Hojnicki. He graduated from Alden Central High School in 1962, where he excelled in athletics and set a track record. In 1965, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving in Okinawa and forming lifelong friendships that remained dear to him.
Following his service, Ray began a twenty year career with National Gypsum in Buffalo, applying computer skills he had learned in the Air Force. Ray and his family relocated to Charlotte with National Gypsum, where he was also involved with the Data Processing Management Association. Ray gave generously of his time to organizations such as the United Way, Junior Achievement, and the Red Cross. Later, he managed The Firehouse Casual Living Store before retiring to focus on his family, his beloved dog JoJo, and his church community.
Ray was a devoted parishioner at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church, where he coached girls’ basketball and organized blood drives. He was an avid sports fan, cheering passionately for the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres, and Duke Blue Devils.
Ray is survived by his daughters, Cheryl and Jeannine; former wife, Marsha; grandchildren, Olivia and Ryan; sisters, Patricia and Lorraine; and many nieces and nephews.
Ray will be remembered for his patience and gentle spirit, his love of storytelling, classic cars, music, and a good game of cards shared with family and friends. His legacy of kindness and devotion will live on in all who knew him.
A funeral mass will be held at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church 3016 Providence Road Charlotte, NC 28211 on Friday, January 9, 2026 at 11:00 am.
