Rick was born November 3rd, 1957 into a large and loving family, as the youngest of seven children to Ollie Lee McClain and Hoyle W. Helms; he later would have two additional influential men in his life to call father, Herman Hemby and Thomas Manus.
Rick lived a remarkable life in his sixty-three years on this Earth. He set out for adventure from his humble beginnings as a family farmhand and spent several years traveling the country with a wide variety of occupations before returning home to plant his roots. As a dedicated member of his community, Rick was involved in public servitude as a firefighter and EMT with the Providence Volunteer Fire Department as well as an Elder with Bethany Church. He was an ever-enterprising man who owned and operated his own successful company, Rick Helms Construction, for over 30 years as a general contractor building all throughout the Carolinas.
In his home life, Rick loved family as friends and friends as family. He facilitated lively social gatherings at his home that he had purchased and built himself on family land. All family and friends that knew him fondly recall pool parties and cookouts hosted in his back yard, and it was never uncommon to see a dozen cars parked at the end of his long, winding driveway. Rick had the power to bring people together in a way that few people could, and his warmth will be missed by every person whose life he’s touched with his love.
