

He was born in Indian Trail, NC on January 23, 1937. Neal was a graduate of Indian Trail High School. He was married to Della Revels Hartis on June 26, 1960. Neal had a career in law enforcement with Southern Railway for 24 years. He had a passion for woodworking, gardening, and any other outdoor activity that involved his family. Always the devoted Christian, Neal enjoyed fellowship with his First Baptist Matthews Sunday School friends and Indian Trail High classmates. He could often be found cooking up one of his "unique" dishes for friends and family that was often pretty tasty. Neal was known to be a prankster and consider yourself loved if you were on the receiving end of one of his pranks.
Neal is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Del, as well as their children: Mona Bowen (Jimmy) and Anthony Hartis (Cheryl). He also leaves behind three grandchildren: Brandi Holder (Garrett), Britany Bowen, and Blake Bowen (Leah) as well as six great-grandchildren: Bow Holder, Tak Holder, Jay Holder, Mae Holder, Callie Bowen, and Peyton Bowen. Neal is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Clingman and Audrey Hartis; his brother, Ralph Hartis (Betty), and his sister, Claudine Curlee (Tom).
A visitation for Neal will be held Saturday, October 4, 2025 from 1:00 PM to 2:30 PM at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC 28227, followed by a funeral service at 2:30 PM. There will be a private graveside ceremony for family only at Indian Trail Cemetery.
