

Thomas Abner Kerns, 97, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Thursday, October 29, 2015. He was born, September 24, 1918 in Huntersville, N.C. He was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Ruby Catherine McCall Kerns. He was a devoted and loyal husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Mr. Kerns served our country in Europe in World War II and received the Bronze Star Medal. He was a member of the American Legion Post 353 for 60 continuous years. He retired from his TV repair business in 1983 and continued to stay active managing his rental properties.
He is survived by his daughter, Martha Kerns Walters of Wilmington, NC, two grandchildren, Kendall Walters of Charlotte, Adrienne Walters Harrington and her husband, Chris, and his great-grandson, Tyson Thomas Harrington, all of Wilmington, NC.
He was one of eight children born to John Wallace Kerns and Mary Abigail Hunter Kerns.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Elizabeth Emmeline Kerns of Charlotte and Alice Burwell Kerns Sanders of Orange City, Florida, his brothers John Wallace Kerns, Jr., Olin Hunter Kerns, and Henry Wilson Kerns, his brother-in-laws J.W. Freeman and Ernest Sanders, and his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, David James McCall and Mary Jane Phifer McCall. He is survived by his sisters Mary Ida Kerns Lewin and her husband, Harold Lewin of Long Island, N.Y., and Minnie Lee Kerns Freeman of Charlotte.
A funeral service will be held at eleven o’clock in the morning, on Tuesday, the 3rd of November, 2015 at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd., Mint Hill, NC 28227 with a visitation held one hour prior to the service.
Interment will immediately follow at Sharon Memorial Park in Charlotte, NC.
