Joyce Mixson

Joyce was born on December 10, 1928 in Birmingham, AL to James and Lora White. After moving to Chattanooga, Joyce graduated from Tyner High School and worked for Blue Cross Blue Shield until marrying Harry Mixson on June 16, 1951.

She raised two sons and maintained a household while Harry made a living on the road. She also returned to college and received an Associates Degree in Computer Science and continued her education until receiving a BS Degree in Organizational Management from Covenant College in 2001 at the age of 73.

Joyce was an active member of Oakwood Baptist Church, a faithful member of the women’s Sunday School Class and she spent her life serving the people of Oakwood.

She was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2000 and has spent the last 16 years battling the disease. She always focused on the positive and found the good in each day. She provided inspiration to those around her, displayed an upbeat attitude and overcame adversity each day.

Joyce was a loyal supporter of her family and friends and believed in personal accountability. She helped those she loved find their way forward through many difficult circumstances and always stood by people through thick and thin.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Harry Mixson, her parents and her brother James “Buddy” White, and sister Virginia Smallen. She is survived by her sons David (Beth) and Mike (Becky) and 4 grandchildren, Carter, Alex and Corena Mixson and Jacob Mixson, sister Bonnie Rowe (John) and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 18th, in the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Rev. Ken Clark officiating. Burial will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 18th, at the funeral home.
