Margaret “Peg” Jane McEwen, age 87, passed away peacefully January 29, 2023 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born on September 4, 1935 in Toledo, Ohio to Truman and Genevieve Elton. She married Charles (Charlie) McEwen in December of 1958 who preceded her in death in 1995.
Margaret, or Peg as she preferred, loved working with children and was a wonderful early childhood teacher for many years. She was known for her creativity in the classroom and was always making new learning activities for her students. She also used her ability to play the piano to write and play songs that she would sing with her students.
In her younger years, Peg played tennis, field hockey and was a member of the marching band where she played the flute. Her flute playing continued even into her retirement years in a community band on Sanibel Island in Florida. She attended Bowling Green State University In Bowling Green, Ohio receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Education.
After college, Peg reconnected with her high school sweetheart, Charlie. They fell in love and married soon after. Theirs was a great love story. Even through difficulties, they were a strong team, always having fun together. One of the things they enjoyed the most was boating. They spent most weekends out on the water. Sometimes coming back under their boat’s power and sometimes under the coast guard boat’s power if the engine failed. It was always an adventure.
After Charlie’s death, Peg continued adventuring even though his absence was devastating. She continued boating and took many trips to many different places. If she got an idea for a trip in her head, she would go.
Peg was also a lover of words. She was an avid reader and writer and was part of book clubs and writer’s groups. She wrote several books herself, the first of which was a grief journal to help others that had also lost a beloved spouse. She would often be found at the beach, journal in hand, jotting down ideas for her next story.
Family was very important to Peg. She was a wonderful mother and when the grands came along, she was there to support them along their endeavors with the gifts of time, words of encouragement, and travel. The great grandchildren brought her pure joy and she enjoyed every moment she had with them.
Peg is survived by her two daughters, Karen West and Mary McEwen; three grandchildren Becky (Rick) Mercer, Emily (Dustin) Hudson Basham, and Kyle (Paige) West; six great grandchildren Elijah Basham, Kynlee Hudson, Evie Mercer, Elsie Claire Basham, Samuel Mercer, and Lily Mercer and some very dear friends. All of whom she loved dearly.
